GABC Member initiative: Building Efficiency Initiative

Status: Implementation

Area: Global

Long goal: Buildings are solutions for cities of the future. Productive, actively managed buildings can integrate and improve multiple systems (energy, water, waste, transportation) to sustainably deliver urban services. We advance solutions through four areas of work: 1. Convening city-scale public-private collaboration for efficiency policies and projects; 2. Testing scalable business and finance models for sustainable approaches to urban services; 3. Encouraging practices to improve building performance information and its transparency; 4. Advancing the adoption of high-performance and net zero buildings and their integration and contributions to urban energy systems.

The Building Efficiency Initiative combines expertise in providing building efficiency solutions with research excellence and on-the-ground experience in creating more prosperous and livable cities. The Building Efficiency Initiative will build market awareness and action on 1) local government leadership by example, particularly in the developing world, 2) local benchmarking and sustainable building certification and labeling approaches, 3) innovative financing to support efficiency investments, and 4) distributed energy systems at the building and community scale. The Initiative will also act as the secretariat for the Building Efficiency Accelerator of Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and provide support to cities participating in the SEforALL Energy Efficiency Accelerator Platform.
