Mexico and Morocco launch local alliances for buildings and construction

In 2018, the GlobalABC was proud to co-launch its second local alliance in emerging economies in Mexico. The two Local Alliances, in Mexico and Morocco, will work towards a zero-emission, efficient and resilient buildings and construction sector in their respective countries.

We at GlobalABC believe that in a future-proof world all buildings – old and new – are zero-emission, efficient and resilient. Today, the GlobalABC gathers 27 countries and over 100 members from all over the world. By establishing local alliances, we can increase the pace and scale of actions through targeted communication, collaboration and solutions facilitated by local knowledge and follow-through.

Founded at COP21, the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction, the GlobalABC mission is to connect global government, private sector and organisations to drive the transition towards a zero-emission, resilient and efficient buildings and construction sector.

As 75% of the infrastructure needed by 2050 is yet to be built, building codes must be urgently addressed to be stronger and future-proof. Building codes are a vital part of national strategies to ramp up climate action and ensure resilient communities as we face climate impacts. National governments are key stakeholders to the GlobalABC and they have been embracing the inclusion of building codes.

The GlobalABC helps drive the ambition one step further through encouraging the establishment of local alliances for buildings and construction. The advantage of these alliances is that they have first-hand knowledge on the local context, stakeholders and needs so can more strongly advocate for buildings and construction sector action on the ground while maintaining a strong connection to the global network.

These local alliances unite local stakeholders across the buildings supply chain to share ideas and lessons learned and take action on key buildings and construction areas like sustainable, affordable housing; financing; regulatory frameworks; the business case for green building; and the role of national academia and research institutions in developing solutions.

The Local Alliance for Buildings and Construction in Mexico and Morocco were launched through the engagement of GlobalABC members Morocco, Mexico, France, and many others. These GlobalABC members came together to share experiences from their efforts towards a zero-emission, resilient and efficient buildings and construction sector.
