G20 Global Summit on Financing Energy Efficiency, Innovation and Clean Technology

12 June 2019 | 12 June 2019

Tokyo, Japan

In order for G20 economies to achieve sustainable, low-carbon growth and development, increasing investments into energy efficiency, innovation and broader clean energy technologies is key.

The crucial role of finance and investment for scaling up energy efficiency has been recognized by G20 economies, which represent 84% of the world’s total economic output, more than 80% of primary energy consumption and 80% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. At the same time, accelerating innovation and investment in clean technologies is also critical to bridge the existing emissions gaps identified between country pledges and activities, and those that are necessary to advance global climate neutrality in a timely way. To realize ambitious decarbonization, innovation will be required across the whole value-chain, including: technology, product and service design, business models, and societal adaptation in energy, buildings, transport, industry and agriculture. Given the high population density and increasingly important role of cities, buildings and transport systems are core to the energy transition and decarbonized world of the future. For G20 economies, greater investments in low-carbon technologies and innovation can, in addition to contributing to their sustainable development goals, strengthen the competitiveness of companies operating in the environmental-conscious economy of the 21st century, enhancing economic resilience.

The G20 Global Summit on Financing Energy Efficiency, Innovation and Clean Technology will take stock of global finance and investments into energy efficiency, innovation and low-carbon technologies, with the energy transition for buildings as one focus area. The event will provide the opportunity for leading financial institutions and policy makers to assess the state of play and define elements of action for G20 economies for the new decade, thereby supporting G20 economies’ objectives to achieve sustainable energy transitions.

The event is by invitation only and will take place on 12 June 2019, in Tokyo, Japan.  To inquire about the event and register interest, please contact Jurei Yada at IPEEC and  Martin Schoenberg at UNEP FI.
